Committee ImageAt the December 2nd School Board meeting the Superintendent, Dr. Darrell Lockwood, notified the Board that he will not be returning as our Superintendent next year. Dr. Lockwood’s current contract expires on June 30th, 2021 and he will provide continued leadership and guidance for the remainder of this school year.

At the December 21st School Board meeting the Board reviewed the options for how to proceed with the Superintendent Search process. Superintendent Lockwood contacted several firms with expertise in the area of executive recruiting for School Administration positions. At the meeting on December 21st, representatives from the New Hampshire School Board Association presented a proposal to manage the search process for the Chester School District.

The Board also considers the possibility of doing the search in-house, using our own personnel to conduct and manage the process. Chairman Richardson noted that a search committee could be formed following past practices and utilizing existing experience from past searches for leadership positions. Mrs. Weider noted that she was in favor of using this approach based on past experiences and outcomes. Each of the Board members offered their ideas and input on conducting the search process.

Superintendent Lockwood noted Mrs. Maria Veale was willing to volunteer to lead this effort on behalf of the Board. Vice Chair Eckerman noted it was important to develop an inclusive, representative search committee. Superintendent Lockwood recommended Mrs. Veale lead the Screening Committee to be selected by the Chester School Board to identify the performance criteria for the position and evaluate candidates. The Board voted in the affirmative for this Superintendent Search option.

The Board is requesting participation on the Screening Committee of volunteers from multiple categories: School Board members; members of Chester Academy Administration; SAU staff; Teachers and Para-educators; Support Staff Members; and up to two (2) parent representatives. The committee will reach out to members of the municipal government that frequently interact with the Superintendent for their feedback and input as well.

The Chester School Board will commence the formal search process for a new Superintendent in January 2021. Interested individuals should plan to submit a letter of interest to serve on the committee.

In addition, the Chester School Board will host a public forum to gather information from the community regarding the characteristics they hope to find in a new Superintendent. This is planned to take place in the first week of February and information on that session will be provided in the next few weeks.
